🏛️ History of Indonesia

Indonesia history spans over 5000 years — from Hindu-Buddhist kingdoms, Majapahit, Islamic sultanates, Dutch colonization, to modern Republic of Indonesia.

Hindu-Buddhist Era (200-1500)

Srivijaya (650-1377) — maritime Buddhist kingdom on Sumatra. Majapahit (1293-1527) — Hindu on Java, peak under Hayam Wuruk. Borobudur (UNESCO) built around 825.

Islamic Sultanates (1300-1602)

Islam came via Arab and Gujarati traders around 13th century. Sultanates of Demak, Mataram, Aceh, Banten. Malay became trading lingua franca.

Dutch Colonization (1602-1942)

VOC founded 1602 — spice monopoly. After VOC bankruptcy 1799, Netherlands directly colonized Dutch East Indies. 350 years of colonization.

Japanese Occupation (1942-1945)

Japan expelled Dutch 1942. Brutal exploitation — 4 million Indonesians died. Japan trained PETA (Defenders of Homeland) — later became national army.

Proclamation of Independence (1945)

August 17, 1945 — Sukarno and Hatta proclaimed independence. War of Independence 1945-1949 against Netherlands. Netherlands recognized independence December 27, 1949.

Sukarno and Suharto Era (1945-1998)

Sukarno first president, Guided Democracy. G30S/PKI 1965 — failed coup, 500,000 communists killed. Suharto president 32 years (1966-1998) — New Order, development but corruption.

Reformation and Modern Indonesia (1998-today)

Asian financial crisis 1997-1998 — Suharto fell. Political reformation. Full democracy since 2004. 280 million population — world largest Muslim country. Joko Widodo president 2014-2024, Prabowo Subianto since 2024.
